Living & working
in Perth.
Energy, food and drink, business services and tourism contribute to Perth’s economy and its wider rural region. The River Tay, city museums and parks are close to everyday life in the centre. Work beyond Perth requires a separate look at the full journey, particularly for early or late shifts.
- Energy and business services
- A compact riverside centre
- Culture and Perthshire outdoors

The local picture
Perth and Kinross · August 2026
Perth and Kinross · 2025
Whole statistical area, not necessarily the town boundary.Employment rate, age 16–64: 78.4% · Perth and Kinross · Jul 2025-Jun 2026. Survey estimate; local results can be volatile.
Area averages are not current asking prices or individual property valuations. Local short-term changes are volatile; use a year or longer. UK HPI house-price observations are provisional and subject to revision. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets; rents are published for Broad Rental Market Areas, which may differ from the local authority.
01Work & opportunity
Energy transition, services and the rural economy.
Invest in Perth identifies energy transition, food and drink, financial and business services, tourism, creative and digital activity and the circular economy. Its 2025 State of Growth report identifies SSE as one example of a large regional employer.
The work location matters: city offices, business sites, hospitality venues and rural employers can require very different journeys. Ask exhibitors about contract length, shifts, training and whether driving is essential. If you are considering self-employment, the council's investment service also points to Business Gateway Tayside and local business support.
- Search both specialist and supporting job functions.
- Check whether work is city-based or regional.
- Ask employers which qualifications they will support.
02Homes & cost of living
Central Perth and the cost of rural travel.
Homes & everyday costs
Start with the centre and streets near the Tay if shops and culture on foot are priorities; compare homes farther out only after testing the work journey. Extra space is useful only if the location also works for groceries, childcare and evenings. Visit potential streets during an ordinary working day.
The official rent figure shown alongside covers the Perth and Kinross broad rental market area. It covers different property types and rural locations, so it is not a Perth-city asking-rent quote. Compare current equivalent listings and add Council Tax, energy, broadband and transport. The council's housing guidance explains alternative housing routes and advice. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets, which limits direct comparison with other UK nations.
- Compare the same bedroom count and furnished status.
- Check heating, storage and property condition.
- Allow for deposits, moving costs and initial bills.
03Getting around
Current Perth bus routes and onward connections.
Stagecoach publishes Perth routes and current timetables. Its 2026 network updates included revised services and connections, so plan from the latest information rather than a saved timetable. Check the actual workplace entrance and the walk from the stop, especially for jobs away from the centre.
For a wider Perthshire commute, test both directions and the relevant days of the week. A city-centre journey can be straightforward while a rural early start or late finish needs another arrangement. Discuss staff transport, parking or flexibility with the employer before assuming a role is practical without a car.
- Check the full return trip.
- Compare a week's fares with car-related costs.
- Recheck service updates before an interview or the fair.
04Life beyond work
Museums, the River Tay and the Inch parks.
VisitScotland highlights Perth Museum, Perth Art Gallery, Perth Theatre and Concert Hall, with the River Tay, North and South Inch parks and Kinnoull Hill offering outdoor options. These make useful starting points for exploring the city at your own pace.
Choose a neighbourhood by the routines you want to keep: a walk after work, a regular class, a café or a nearby library. Wider Perthshire trips can be a bonus, but check transport, opening times and conditions before setting out. A good everyday base matters more than being close to every attraction.
- Explore both the centre and riverside.
- Check venue programmes for current events.
- Find a regular community activity near home.
05Settling in
Scottish services and household arrangements.
Settle in well
Perth and Kinross Council's housing guidance describes advice and the common housing register. Use it to explore your options, while checking current eligibility and availability directly. Confirm Council Tax and local services for the address, including any parking or shared-building arrangements.
Follow NHS inform for GP registration. If you need childcare or a school place, check the council and individual providers early, including opening times and the full journey from work. Keep your tenancy documents, employment details and monthly budget together so you can manage the first few weeks without surprises.
- Confirm the postcode's council and services.
- Arrange healthcare registration.
- Plan the period before your first salary.
