Living & working
in Leicester.
Manufacturing, services, education and healthcare all contribute to Leicester’s economy. Its Cultural Quarter and independent businesses give the centre a life beyond the working day, with parks elsewhere in the city. A home’s connection to the workplace is worth assessing alongside its street, space and running costs.

01Work & opportunity
Manufacturing, services and employment support.
The council’s local-plan profile describes a diverse small-business economy, manufacturing strength and a substantial education, health and public-service presence. It also names office-sector examples including Mattioli Woods, Hastings Insurance and IBM, while workspaces such as LCB Depot support smaller creative businesses.
For training and help getting into work, Leicester City Council points to the Leicester Employment Hub and describes apprenticeships, graduate routes and volunteering opportunities. Ask employers which qualifications they require on entry and whether they support further development. Search by occupation across several industries instead of assuming the city’s manufacturing history limits the options.
- Use the Employment Hub for work and training support.
- Check the qualifications required for the role.
- Confirm the site and shift pattern.
02Homes & cost of living
Neighbourhoods, property size and household costs.
Homes & everyday costs
The centre and Cultural Quarter are useful starting points if you want shops, venues and a central work location close together. Compare them with residential areas connected to the particular hospital, campus or business site you would use. A neighbourhood near one employer may be less convenient for another, even within the same city.
The official rent figure shown alongside covers Leicester. The figure covers all property sizes and existing and new tenancies; it is not the current asking rent for a specific flat or shared room. Compare equivalent listings and budget for council tax, utilities, broadband and commuting. Visit at ordinary weekday and evening times before deciding.
- Compare the same property size.
- Include household bills and commuting.
- Visit before signing.
03Getting around
City routes, walking and cycle facilities.
Choose How You Move provides local walking and cycling information, including routes from the railway station towards the centre and details of cycle parking. St Margaret’s Bus Station, the railway station and central destinations serve different parts of a journey, so check the transfer rather than treating all central stops as one place.
Test a route to the exact workplace at your expected start and finish times. A cycling plan should include storage at both ends and a realistic winter alternative. If using buses or trains, check current ticket coverage, evening services and disruption information with the operator. Confirm any assistance requirements for the complete journey.
- Check both outward and return trips.
- Plan for evenings and weekends.
- Confirm access requirements.
04Life beyond work
The Cultural Quarter and Leicester’s parks.
The official Cultural Quarter guide highlights theatre, independent cinema, music, exhibitions and LCB Depot among the area’s creative activity. Its converted industrial buildings provide a distinctive setting, but an appealing evening district is not automatically the right residential choice for every household.
Leicester and the surrounding county also offer a range of parks and landscapes; Watermead is one example to explore beyond the centre. Build a scouting visit around both culture and routine: groceries, a green-space walk and a possible class or sports activity. Check the current programme, opening times and return transport before making plans.
- Explore the Cultural Quarter.
- Browse the official parks listings.
- Check theatre, cinema and music programmes.
05Settling in
City services and the Employment Hub.
Settle in well
Use Leicester City Council for city services, housing, council tax and family-service information. Check the authority for an address outside the city boundary before applying city-specific information. Families should confirm school and childcare availability with the responsible service and provider rather than relying on a map.
Use the NHS GP finder, check broadband availability and keep a record of tenancy terms and utility readings. The Employment Hub can be useful alongside fair conversations if you need help finding training or work experience. Ask about shift patterns, workplace attendance and induction before committing to a housing budget.
- Check the council for your address.
- Use the NHS GP finder.
- Confirm arrangements before move-in.
