Living & working
in Cambridge.
Science, healthcare and university work shape Cambridge, while independent shopping streets offer a different view from the historic centre. Cambridge South opened in June 2026, adding a station beside the Biomedical Campus. Its arrival matters for anyone comparing a southern workplace with homes elsewhere in the city.

01Work & opportunity
The Biomedical Campus and its supporting occupations.
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus brings healthcare, research and commercial life sciences together. Its careers directory includes AstraZeneca, Abcam, Cambridge University Hospitals and Royal Papworth Hospital.
A science-led economy needs more than researchers: consider administration, facilities, technical services, finance and patient-facing work alongside specialist positions. The campus careers page also points to apprenticeships. Check each employer’s own requirements and location, and ask whether training is built into the role. The council’s State of the City evidence is useful background, but a citywide economic profile cannot tell you whether one occupation is currently hiring.
- Include support roles in a Biomedical Campus search.
- Check qualification and training requirements.
- Confirm the campus or workplace entrance.
02Homes & cost of living
City housing costs and the campus journey.
Homes & everyday costs
Mill Road and Romsey are useful starting points if independent shops and food businesses appeal. Trumpington and the southern side of the city deserve consideration for Biomedical Campus journeys; the right choice depends on the actual route, property and household needs. Visit several streets rather than treating an entire district as a uniform housing product.
The official rent figure shown alongside covers Cambridge. It covers all property sizes and existing and new tenancies, rather than current asking rents or room-only lets. Build a realistic budget from comparable live properties, including council tax, utilities, transport and any childcare. A home outside the city boundary may have a different rent profile and council.
- Compare the same property size and tenancy type.
- Check the council area for an outer-city address.
- Test the commute before committing.
03Getting around
Cambridge South and the Biomedical Campus.
Greater Anglia confirms that Cambridge South opened on 28 June 2026 beside the Biomedical Campus, between Cambridge and Shelford. It serves the area around Addenbrooke’s, the Rosie and Royal Papworth hospitals. This is a live option to investigate, rather than a proposed station still years away.
Choose the station, bus or cycling route that reaches your own destination. A journey labelled Cambridge may not end near the workplace. Check current timetables, evening services and the last stretch on foot; if you need assistance, confirm the whole route with the operator. For a cycling routine, inspect the route in person and include secure storage and winter travel in the decision.
- Include Cambridge South when comparing campus routes.
- Check services for the hours you need.
- Confirm station access requirements.
04Life beyond work
Independent streets beyond the historic centre.
Visit Cambridge’s shopping guide highlights Mill Road and Romsey for international food shops, independent businesses and everyday services. Spending time there can be a better test of daily life than only walking through the central college streets.
The council’s visitor pages bring together parks, playgrounds, walking and cycling information. Use them to plan a weekend that reflects your routine: a green-space visit, grocery shopping and a trip to the area where you might work. Check individual venues and university attractions for current opening arrangements; access and ticketing can differ from the view from the street.
- Explore Mill Road’s independent shops.
- Find a nearby park and regular activity.
- Check attraction access directly.
05Settling in
City services and Cambridgeshire childcare.
Settle in well
Cambridge City Council provides council-tax, housing, parking and community-service information, with waste services linked through Greater Cambridge. Confirm that a prospective home is in the city council area before using its charges or service arrangements; a Cambridge postal address can cover a wider geography.
For families, investigate school and childcare arrangements early through the responsible council and provider. Use the NHS GP finder, check broadband availability for the exact address and organise utilities before move-in. At the fair, discuss workplace attendance and start times: a hybrid role or an early hospital shift can change which home and transport combination is practical.
- Confirm the correct local authority.
- Use the NHS GP finder.
- Ask employers about start times and workplace attendance.
