Living & working
in Aberdeen.

Energy shapes Aberdeen’s working life, from engineering and procurement to the transition into new technologies. The coast and Old Aberdeen give the city a recognisable setting; jobs across the wider shire, however, call for a different housing and travel search from a central office role.

Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets; rents are published for Broad Rental Market Areas, which may differ from the local authority.

01

Work & opportunity

Energy, technology and the businesses around them.

Energy remains central to the Aberdeen city-region economy, with oil and gas expertise feeding work in the energy transition. Invest Aberdeen also identifies digital technology, food and drink, agriculture and life sciences. Relevant occupations include engineering, project support, procurement, software and commercial roles, alongside specialist scientific work.

The University of Aberdeen is one of the city's education and research institutions. Ask exhibitors where the role is based, whether site travel is involved and which qualifications they recognise. If you are changing sector, translate existing safety, customer, technical or operations experience into the language of the vacancy.

Make it practical
  • Search by skill as well as industry.
  • Separate city roles from wider Aberdeenshire sites.
  • Ask about entry routes, training and shift patterns.

Homes & cost of living

Central Aberdeen, Old Aberdeen and the wider shire.

Homes & everyday costs

Start by comparing central Aberdeen with Old Aberdeen, then test each address against your work journey. A central home puts shops and transport close by; living nearer a campus or workplace may shorten the daily journey. Visit the street at the time you would normally arrive home.

The official rent figure shown alongside covers Aberdeen and Shire. This is an all-property-area benchmark, not a quotation for a particular flat or a city-only asking rent. Add Council Tax, utilities, broadband, contents insurance and travel. The council's private-tenant guidance is the place to check landlord registration, tenancy paperwork and deposit protection before committing. Scottish rent inputs are mainly advertised new lets, which limits direct comparison with other UK nations.

Make it practical
  • Compare properties with the same bedroom count.
  • Ask about heating, insulation and included furnishings.
  • Keep an inventory and dated meter readings.
03

Getting around

Bus routes to city and outlying workplaces.

First Bus provides Aberdeen journey planning, network maps, hospital-service information and live service updates. Use the actual workplace postcode when testing a route: a city-centre interview does not necessarily mean the job itself is centrally located.

Try the journey for the expected start and finish times, including weekends if the role involves shifts. For a home beyond the city, compare the entire return journey and the cost of any connections. A route that works during office hours may not fit an early start; ask the employer about staff transport or flexible arrival arrangements where relevant.

Make it practical
  • Check the return service before accepting a shift pattern.
  • Allow for the walk between stop and workplace.
  • Recheck service changes before event day.

Life beyond work

Old Aberdeen, the coast and local culture.

Aberdeen's appeal is the combination of a working city, its coast and the distinctive streets of Old Aberdeen. VisitAberdeenshire's guides cover art, culture, free activities and routes into the surrounding countryside, giving you options for both a short lunch break and a longer day out.

Find a regular café, library, walking route or local group close to home.

Make it practical
  • Explore Old Aberdeen on foot.
  • Use the official what's-on calendar for current events.
  • Check opening times before travelling to attractions.

Settling in

City services and Scottish tenancy guidance.

Settle in well

Use Aberdeen City Council's housing services for local housing advice, and confirm the local authority responsible for your chosen address if you are moving into the surrounding shire. Check the Council Tax band and any parking requirements while comparing homes.

Use NHS inform's GP-registration guidance after moving. If schools or childcare matter to your household, check arrangements against the exact address and the hours you need before signing a tenancy. Keep your employment, tenancy and identification documents together so applications and appointments are easier to manage.

Make it practical
  • Confirm your council and household bills.
  • Arrange healthcare registration.
  • Test work, shopping and childcare journeys together.
